Halloween is one of my absolute favorite holidays, and I look forward to it every year! There's something magical about the spooky vibes, pumpkins, and eerie decorations that just spark my creativity. I love leaning into the theme of Halloween when creating quilt patterns—it’s a chance to be playful and let the festive spirit shine through. That’s why I get so excited to offer Halloween-inspired quilt patterns to all of you!
In this post, I’m sharing a roundup of my free Halloween-themed quilt blocks, plus a few of my paid quilt patterns that work beautifully in Halloween colors. And if you’re looking for even more inspiration, I’ve included a list of quilt patterns from other designers that I find especially inspiring for spooky season. Whether you’re stitching up a table runner, a wall hanging, or a full quilt, you’re sure to find something here that’ll get you in the Halloween spirit. Let’s dive in!
What Makes a Quilt Pattern a Halloween Quilt Pattern?
Before we dive into the quilt patterns, I want to explain what I think makes a quilt pattern feel like a Halloween quilt. For me, it often comes down to the design itself. Some patterns have very obvious Halloween themes, like my Witch’s Cauldron block or Little Bats Wall Hanging. The imagery in these designs immediately brings to mind all things spooky and festive.
Then, there are what I call "Halloween-adjacent" designs, like my Eddy Allan Crow and Little Bats Wall Hanging. These blocks have a hint of Halloween but don’t scream it outright. When you use traditional Halloween colors—think oranges, blacks, purples—they can take on that spooky feel. But what’s great about these designs is that if you swap out those colors, they can transform into something entirely different, giving you more versatility.
Finally, there's the idea of using what I call "regular" quilt patterns, but with the right color palette. You can take any pattern and give it a Halloween twist by using dark, moody hues or festive colors like black, orange, and purple. It’s amazing how much a change in fabric can transform a design into something perfect for the Halloween season!
Free Halloween Quilt Block Patterns
1. Eddy Allan Crow
Eddy Allan Crow was my contribution to the 2023 Spooky Season Sampler, and it's one of my favorites! Inspired by the crows in my own Halloween decor, I wanted to design a block that was fully pieced rather than appliqué. It measures 15.5" x 15.5" unfinished and comes together pretty easily, even though it looks complex. And of course, the name is a playful nod to Edgar Allan Poe—I couldn’t resist!
2. Witchy Feet
Witchy Feet is a fun, playful quilt block that features a whimsical pair of witch feet with pointy shoes. I designed this block because, while I love seeing witch feet in Halloween decor, they’re usually done in appliqué, and I wanted a fully pieced version. This pattern can easily be made into a pillow or a wall hanging—perfect for adding a handmade touch to your spooky decorations!
3. Witch’s Cauldron
The Witch’s Cauldron quilt block was part of one of my past Halloween releases and quickly became a favorite. This block is perfect for a pillow cover or wall hanging, and it adds the perfect touch of witchy magic to your spooky decor. I used all solids in eerie shades for the bubbles and cauldron, with a green binding that I’m still obsessed with. Whether you hang it on the wall or use it as a pillow, it’s sure to become a fun Halloween staple!
4. Halloween Table Topper
The Halloween Table Topper was designed to bring a modern, clean spiderweb look to your Halloween table decor. Made using fat quarters and contrasting thread, this topper has a sleek and spooky vibe. I created it because I realized I was missing some fun table decorations, and this quick project has become a favorite in my Halloween rotation! Whether you use it for a party or to add a touch of spooky charm to your table, it’s sure to be a hit.
5. Little Bats Wall Hanging
The Little Bats Wall Hanging is a quick and easy Halloween project that adds just the right amount of spooky charm to your home. This block features simple and cute bat designs that come together quickly. I used two different fabrics for some added interest and finished it off with a fun Halloween-themed stripe binding. It’s perfect for bringing a little bit of Halloween into your space!
Halloween Quilt Patterns in Spooky Colors
Beyond these free quilt blocks, some of my other quilt patterns can take on a spooky vibe when made with Halloween colors. It’s amazing how a simple change in fabric can turn a regular quilt into the perfect Halloween décor! Keep an eye out for these patterns that work wonderfully in eerie hues like black, orange, and purple.
1. Cozy Village Quilt (Two-Tone Version)
The Cozy Village quilt pattern, originally released in 2022, has a special two-tone variation that works beautifully for Halloween. This version, inspired by tester Breanna, simplifies the design to just two colors, making it a perfect choice for dark and moody Halloween hues. Originally made with cozy grey and cream fabrics, it can easily be transformed with spooky blacks, oranges, or purples for a festive, modern house quilt. This two-tone extension is available for free, though you’ll need the full Cozy Village pattern for the main instructions.
2. Golden Hour Quilt (Two-Tone Version)
The Golden Hour quilt pattern takes on a whole new vibe in this two-tone variation, created by my tester Breanna. When she reached out to ask if a two-color version would be okay, I couldn’t say yes fast enough—this is what testing is all about! Breanna’s version brings a modern, striking look to the design, and it’s perfect for Halloween when done in moody shades like black and orange or deep purple. This version isn’t an official colorway, but the result couldn’t have turned out better!
3. Solstice Lights Quilt
The Solstice Lights quilt pattern is one of my favorite Halloween-inspired quilts, especially with the black, orange, and tan fabrics I used from Fig Tree & Co's All Hallows Eve collection. I designed this pattern over the summer, and the moment I finished mocking it up, I knew this was the perfect project to finally cut into my precious fat quarter bundle. The mix-and-match scrappy look gives it a cozy, autumnal vibe, and I backed it with Mammoth Flannel to make it even cozier for the fall months.
