Meet September's Pattern of the Month - Copihue!
Hey friends! September’s here, and I’m really excited to share this month’s quilt pattern—Copihue. This one’s close to my heart, not just because of the design but because it’s named after the national flower of Chile, where I’m from. The Copihue (pronounced co-pee-way) is a beautiful flower that only grows in the Valdivian forests of southern Chile. Fun fact: the name comes from the Mapudungun word "kopiwe," which is a language spoken by the Mapuche people in Chile and Argentina.
This pattern is a celebration of my Chilean roots and the beautiful landscapes of my home country. Just like how I honored my grandmother in June with Memi’s Lemons, this month I’m honoring my heritage with the Copihue quilt. 🌸
Copihue is on sale for the entire month of September 2024! You can grab the pattern - both download and printed versions - at a discount all month. Plus enjoy savings on my Modern Curves acrylic template set this month as a bonus! These templates pair with 5 quilt patterns in my library and are so easy to use. Now, let me show you the three versions of the Copihue quilt I made and why I love each of them.
The All-Solids Cover Version
When I finally nailed down the design for Copihue, I knew I had to try it in all solids. I went through a bunch of color combos and mockups—at least a dozen—but when I hit on this pink and yellow combo, I knew it was the one. The bright colors make the pattern pop, and I love how the solid fabrics keep the focus on the design itself. This version is the one you’ll see on the cover, and it’s definitely a favorite of mine.
Pair It with the Modern Curves Templates
To add some extra precision and flair to your Copihue quilt, my acrylic quilting template set called Modern Curves pairs perfectly with this pattern. These templates help achieve smooth, consistent curves, making the piecing process even easier. While all of my quilt patterns come with printable templates, these acrylic templates remove the need for printing and ensure perfect curves each time! If you’re getting comfortable with curves or looking to streamline your process, these templates are a great tool to have on hand. You can learn more about how to use them here.
The Daybreak Collection Version
Next up is the version I made with my Daybreak fabric collection. The timing was perfect because the sample yardage arrived just as I was planning the quilt along in 2022. The floral elements in the fabric paired so nicely with the Copihue pattern, and the big blocks really let those fabrics shine. This quilt feels like the best of both worlds—my love for fabric design and quilting coming together. I'll never get over how proud of myself I am for this quilt. When I look at it, I am reminded of how much of myself I put into my work, and this quilt is the culmination of it all!
The Low-Volume Version
And then there’s the low-volume version. I’ve always admired low-volume quilts, but I usually go for bright, saturated colors. This time, though, I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’ll admit, I had my doubts as I was making it. Would the contrast be strong enough? Was the yellow too much? But when I finally finished the quilt top, I was surprised at how much I loved it. The soft, subtle look was different from what I usually do, but it totally worked. Fun fact: this quilt was the hardest quilt to photograph due to the colors of the fabric.
Special Longarm Quilting Offer
I can’t say enough good things about my friend Alexis from Stitched by Alexis. She’s been photographing all my Pattern of the Month quilts, and they look stunning! Thanks to her, you can enjoy a 15% discount on edge-to-edge quilting for all Copihue quilts sent to her by October 15th. Just use the code COPIHUE15 on the Stitched by Alexis order form.
Wrapping It Up
Making the Copihue quilt has been quite the journey—from the original design back in 2019 to finally writing the pattern in 2021 and creating these three versions. Each one is special to me in its own way, and I’m so happy to share them with you.
I hope this pattern inspires you, whether you go for a bold color combo, use your favorite fabric collection, or try something new like a low-volume palette. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Happy quilting, and don’t forget to check out the full Pattern of the Month collection before you go! See you next month with another fun pattern to share!
