April Pattern of the Month: Hexie Blooms

April Pattern of the Month: Hexie Blooms

Hey there, my quilting friends! April showers bring May flowers, but in this Pattern of the Month series, they also bring the vibrant and playful "Hexie Blooms" quilt pattern into to focus. This month, I'm beyond thrilled to share with you a pattern that's as refreshing as the spring season itself.

Meet April's Pattern of the Month - Hexie Blooms!

Hexie Blooms is a modern take on the classic Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilts. This block-based pattern uses NO y-seams and no hand sewing, and it includes three design options for maximum flexibility – sew a scrappy version with fabric from your stash or your favorite precut, use FQs for a stunning full bloom version, or use yardage for a classic 2-color version.

Hexie Blooms is on sale through the entire month of April 2024! You can shop the quilt pattern plus new quilt kits and stickers all month long. Find the full Pattern of the Month collection at the end of this blog post.

Okay, now on to the quilt! When I sat down to write this quilt pattern, I had loved and admired the look of vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden hexagon quilts for years, but I'd always known I don't have the time, or the patience, to hand piece one. I knew half hexies was the way to go because who actually has time to piece a quilt full of y-seams? Plus, making the half hexies large and in charge would make sewing this quilt top up a breeze!

My cover quilt is actually the second sample I pieced together. My first sample was a fabulous ombre fabric version you can see a little farther down. The cover consists of all solid fabrics for a soft and snuggly feel while paying homage to the traditional nature of this quilt pattern!

The finished result of this quilt is way better than I ever planned it to be. I did some straight-line quilting with my Janome 4120QDC and followed the lines of the hexagons in the quilt. This is one of my favorite ways to quilt because you don't need any marking tools and it accentuates the design of the quilt pattern.

The next sample I wanted to quickly highlight it my ombre fabric version. This Hexie Blooms Quilt was SO FUN to make! Since the fabric has an ombre saturation throughout, cutting my half hexies from the width of fabric resulted in this scrappy effect. I really let the fabric do most of the work in this quilt, and I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out.

Last Hexie Blooms Quilt I am showcasing is my Hooked fabric collection sample! This fabric collection was designed by Mx Domestic for Art Gallery Fabrics. It featured different crochet and yarn prints which was perfect for my mom - the avid knitter and crocheter. I loved that the fabrics played into the traditional feel of this quilt pattern - what else is more traditional than crocheting, right?

The Hexie Blooms quilt pattern is great for those that love a traditional feel to your quilt. With the half hexie piecing and the big blocks, you could finish this quilt up in a weekend!

I hoested a quilt along for Hexie Blooms back when it was released, and out of it came some helpful videos for cutting and piecing. You can view the Hexie Blooms QAL playlist from YouTube below.

I will forever continue to brag on my friend Alexis of Stitched by Alexis. I've been sending her all of my Pattern of the Month quilts (check out Cabin Peaks cover, Andes Ode cover, and Midpoint cover) to have some pretty new pictures taken. I know I say this every time but oh my goodness - they are just so dang pretty! Thank you, Alexis, for always taking good care of my quilts and making them shine!

I've actually teamed up with Alexis to bring you some awesome longarm quilting discounts each month! You can enjoy 15% off edge-to-edge (E2E) quilting on all Hexie Blooms quilts sent to her by May 15th. Just use the code HEXIEBLOOMS15 on the Stitched by Alexis longarm quilting order form.
