Whirlwind - The Emerald One

Whirlwind - The Emerald One

Have you ever made a quilt and then immediately put it away to work on your next project? That's what happened with this Whirlwind Quilt that I made over a year ago. Yep, I completely forgot that I never shared this quilt with you all until now! We can all thank St. Patrick's Day for bringing this one back to the surface.

College Graduation Quilt

I stitched this Whirlwind Quilt up for my sister-in-law's college graduation back in 2021. This was a little bit of a last minute make and I knew I needed to pick a pattern that would come together fairly quickly but still had that modern look about it. I landed on Whirlwind because it makes use of large but simple blocks and is super easy to sew.

I made this monochromatic quilt using various tones of green for her. While this is not normally a color I gravitate toward, it's her favorite color and I knew it would be loved just like this. Since the background color makes up a decent bit of this quilt design, I decided to go with her favorite shade of green - Emerald. From there, I sprinkled in a range of greens and mints. Scroll to the end for a list of all fabrics used!

The backing fabric that I used was from the AGF collection - Wild Forgotten. I knew instantly that I had to use this fabric for the backing because 1) green and 2) some of the motifs in the print remind me a lot of her tattoos!

Simple Quilting

As I mentioned earlier, I was kind of on a tight timeline with this quilt, so I opted for some simple, straight-line quilting. I used emerald green thread for the quilting to help it blend in with the different shades of green throughout the quilt. At the time, I wished I would have had a little more time to do some "fancier" quilting, but after coming back to this quilt more than a year later, I'm really happy with the way it turned out! Since this was gifted, it has had lots of snuggle time with my SIL and that's really all that matters!

I wish that I would have taken more progress photos to share with you all! I unfortunately ran right through this quilt in my hurry. The quilt came together in less than a week - from cutting fabric all the way to the binding at the very end. I had to get in plane shortly after finishing it to fly down for her college graduation. Talk about cutting it close!
