Yesterday, I shared how the officially licensed Night Court quilt pattern came to be. Today, I'll share a little of the in between–so, after I got the licensing, but before I made the throw size quilt I shared in that blog post.
My first sample for this pattern was the wall hanging size that I made for my office. I started piecing this together the day after I signed the licensing contract because I was just so excuted about it. I technically had other projects that I should've worked on first (like my bookmarks quilt, spooky season blocks, and Garden of Quilts prep) but I simply could not wait to make this.
The Fabric
Since I knew I would be keeping this wall hanging and hanging it in my office, I wanted to pick colors I loved and that would look good in my office/studio space. I also knew I wanted to use solids to keep that clean look.
So I headed to my stash of solids and picked some blues and some purples that I adore–Confetti Cotton Solids in Denim, Bleached Denim, Bear Lake, Orchid, and Princess.
For the stars, I went back and forth a lot on which color to use–gold yellows or silver? In the end, I got real with myself and went with silver grey since I prefer those over yellow gold. As I was digging in my stash for the perfect grey, I came across an old Essex fabric cut with touches of metallic silver and I immediately knew this was the fabric to use for the stars.
The Quilting
After I finished piecing this, it hung on my office for close two months before I had the time to actually finish it–it looked pretty cute though. I was honestly a little afraid of ruining it with the quilting.
I went back and forth A LOT when considering how to quilt this one. I considered some 1/2" straight line quilting and echo quilting the mountains. In the end I went somewhere in between? I did straight line quilting every 3" on the horizontal seams for the mountains. Then, I did a 60º crosshatch following the angles on the triangles.
For the backing and binding, I kept it simple wanting to keep the clean, crips look. So I used the same white on the background for the binding, and a low volume white for the backing.
I am so happy with how it turned out–and I didn't ruin it with the quilting! Now I get to see this (completed) wall hanging every day and it makes me so, so happy!
