Meet Crescent II! If you've been around here for a little while, you might recognize this design and the name "Crescent". This was my 13th pattern released back in 2020, almost four years ago! This pattern has always been one of my favorites, but felt like something was missing.
Then, last year, I released Modern Curves, a set of acrylic template with Riley Blake Designs for my curved patterns such as Memi's Lemons and Reverie. Only problem? It didn't work with Crescent! So I decided this was the perfect time to give this pattern a facelift so it could reach its full potential!
Precuts Friendly Pattern
So, the very first thing I did when looking at rewriting this pattern was ensuring the 2.0 version would work with the Modern Curves Templates and therefore would work with precuts. The original version only included information for FQs and no precuts, so this is a fun new addition to the pattern!
The pattern specifically asks for 10" squares, also known as Layer Cakes or 10" Stackers. These precuts are fantastic for when you fall in love with a collection but can't afford to purchase a full FQ bundle or yardage of each print. However, you could also use 5" squares (Charm Packs), and of course the trusty Fat Quarters.
With this first sample I made for Crescent II, I wanted to highlight the use of precuts, so I grabbed a Layer Cake of my fabric collection Moonchild and got to cutting!
While the pattern includes paper templates, using the acrylic templates made this process so, so quick and I was able to get sewing in no time. I love how quickly these blocks come together – they only have 3 seams total so it's a fast progress!
Longarm Quilting and Finishes
Because I knew I still had another sample to make for this pattern release, I sent this off to be quilted by one of my favorite people - Katie Hanson of Modern Textiles!
Of course, I wasn't sure which panto I wanted to use. Thankfully, Katie knows me really well and sent me 4 incredible options, but as soon as I saw Vega I knew it was the pantograph to use! I love the subtle curves and stars that go so perfectly with the quilt design and fabric, while the straight lines provide some nice structure to the overall design.
For the backing, I kept it simple by using a coordinating solid fabric - Confetti Cotton Solids in Lilac. And for the binding I use one of the subtle striped prints from Moonchild - Signals in Heather.
