Yesterday, I shared the cover quilt for the Bookmarks quilt pattern. That quilt used Layer Cakes. However, the Bookmarks quilt pattern includes two fabric options - layer cakes and fat quarters! Because of the two options, I knew from the get go that I wanted to make two samples. The layer cake one using my Between the Pages fabric collection and a second sample using fat quarters in all solid fabric.
Fat Quarter Quilt Pattern
The fat quarters requirements for Bookmarks change depending on the quilt size. The pattern includes four sizes: baby, throw, twin, and bed (queen). For this sample I knew I'd be making a throw size, so I knew I needed nine colors, plus the background. But I was really, really indecisive when it came to which colors I wanted to use.
When I created the mockups, I came up with a few options I loved and it took me a while to decide which one to make. I almost ended up making two of them, to be honest. In the end though, I kept coming back to the purple and pink deliciousness in top, center of the mockups below.
Once I decided on the color way for this sample, I wanted to make the quilt right away. Thankfully, I was able to find just the right colors in my stash. They do differ slightly from the mockup but I think the final combination is delightful.
The nine fat quarters I used are Confetti Cottons Solids in Putty, Frosting, Peony, Coral, Hot Pink, Raspberry, Princess, Orchid, and Eggplant.
Long Arm Quilting
Since this was the first sample I made for this pattern release, and I had a busy schedule coming up, I sent this quilt off to a long arm quilter, Stephanie of Hillside Stitches.
I met Stephanie through some mutuals friends and she's recently started offering long-arm services from her home in Wisconsin. We are both readers so this felt like the perfect quilt to send her way. While filling out my form, I put down I wanted white thread for my quilting, since that's what I use for 99% of my quilts but Stephanie messaged me with the idea of using something different. She proposed we used a variegated thread with pinks and purples to go with the colors on the quilts and I said let's go for it! and I am SO glad I did!
I love the panto we picked, Dainty Lady Floral, and the slight variations on the thread. It's not too on your face, but just enough to add a little extra fun to the quilt finish!
For the binding and backing, I kept going with the theme of pink pink pink. For the backing I used some Dainty Daisy in Frosting I had on hand and used Raspberry solid for the binding.
Overall, I adore how this quilt came out! I love how different fabrics can change the whole feel of a quilt. Where my Between the Pages sample feels cozy and soft, this one feels fun and crips. They complement each other so well!
