Crescent II - The Summer Sunset One

Crescent II - The Summer Sunset One

I am so excited to share today's quilt! This Crescent II quilt comes from the wonderful Amy Robertson! Amy is a long time tester for Cotton and Joy patterns and, without a doubt, she always picks the most incredible color combinations so I couldn't wait to see what she did with this pattern re-design!

I always feel like I arrived to the quilt game a little bit late; there is so much gorgeous fabric that I haven't had the opportunity to collect and so many beautiful patterns that I haven't had the chance to make. Crescent II felt like the perfect way to use treasured fabric and make a pattern that I wasn't around for the first time it released.

As soon as I saw the pattern, I really wanted to play with the idea that each crescent shape represented the moon at a different stage of rising. Originally I considered making the background a smooth ombre, but I wasn't sure if that would make sense in the big picture.

Instead, I chose fabric that pulled colours from the summer sunset I envisioned in my head. I wanted colours that evoked warmth and that considered saturation. You know that magical time in the evening when the sky is orange and pink and purple, and the moon slowly fades into view? That was my inspiration.

I started by pulling together a loose ombre of pinks and purples and as I started cutting, I felt like maybe the colours were a bit too similar, so I decided to add whites and creams. When it came time to choose the background, I knew I needed to do something with some contrast so that the crescent shapes stood out.

I went with this peachy orange from Rise & Shine by Ruby Star Society. Purple and yellow are across from each other on the colour wheel so I knew that peach would compliment the purple in the quilt, since orange and yellow are both warm colours from the same side of the colour wheel. I also liked the way the peachy background brought out the peachy pink colour from the apple and flower fabric from Kimberly Kight's Lil line.

I used Fran's acrylic templates to cut out my pieces. This was my first time using an acrylic template versus one that I printed at home on paper and WOW, what a difference that made in the process!

I longarmed this quilt using a panto called Midnight Moon from Sew Shabby Quilting. I chose it to complement the moon theme and add some whimsy. Lastly, I chose black and white striped binding to complete the quilt because that is my very favourite. I think that every quilt looks good with black and white binding and this one especially so.
